12 Miles West Theatre Company is an award-winning, not-for-profit professional resident theater company dedicated to presenting high quality productions for the enrichment of the local and regional community with an emphasis on original and lesser-known works as well as innovative interpretations of classic plays. The company also endeavors to identify and support New Jersey artists, specifically by creating a resident company and providing them with a home where they can grow artistically by creating, developing and performing exciting dramatic productions in a viable and nurturing environment.

Our History: 12 Miles West Theatre Company was born in the summer of 1992 in Montclair, NJ when a group of local theater artists gathered informally to share ideas and collaborate on projects. We presented our first performance in a rented church space under the name 'Montclair Theatre Project'. By the end of our first season, we had established ourselves as the only resident theatre company in the state. We soon went on to receive six awards in the Star-Ledger's Theatre Critics' list of the season's theatrical bests where we were cited as "one of the most promising theatre troupes in the state." We moved into our first home, in the heart of downtown Montclair, in 1995. It featured an intimate 99-seat theatre, coffee bar and wheelchair accessibility. Most importantly, it allowed us to offer a full season of main and second stage plays, workshops, readings and family theatre productions and served as our home until July, 2004.

For the next three short years, 12 Miles West was located at 562 Bloomfield Ave in Bloomfield, NJ. Originally built in 1913 as the Lincoln Theater, part of the legitimate theater circuit, the space most recently served as a movie house. After months of negotiations, the company was unable to reach an agreeable sale price with the owner and decided to leave the space in September, 2007.

12 Miles West will be producing its 2007-08 in residence at Playwrights Theatre in Madison.

To Playwrights Theatre By Car:

From the NJ Turnpike
Proceed to exit 14. At Exit 14, take I-78 West (Local). Follow instructions for I-78 below.

From the Garden State Parkway
(If you are coming from the south, it is better to use the Turnpike). The GSP/I-78 intersection from the south does not have an I-78 West exit. You must get off the GSP at the I-78 East exit (exit 142) and make the next possible U-turn to I-78 West. If you are coming from the north, take exit 142 for I-78 West, then follow directions from I-78 West below.

From I-78 West
Take exit 48 (NJ 24/124W - Morristown). On NJ24/124, travel approximately 3 miles to exit 7A (NJ 124 West). Follow the 124 West - Chatham signs to a two-lane highway (124 West). In two miles you will see a Madison Town sign hanging over the road (Lukoil station on the corner). Travel 5 lights (2 miles) after the sign, not counting the light at the sign. Make a left at the 5th light onto Green Village Road (there is an old ornate castle-like structure on the corner - the Museum of Early Trades and Crafts). Go through 1 light, up the hill 300 yards. Playwrights Theatre's sign is on the right.

From I-80/I-287
Take I-80 to 287 South. Take 287 South to Morristown NJ 124, exit 35. Proceed east on NJ 124 for approximately 3 miles. Just past the Drew University campus, the road will fork. Bear right onto King's Road. Proceed to first traffic light (Sunoco station on corner), make a right onto Green Village road and proceed 300 yards up the hill. Playwrights Theatre's sign is on the right.

From Trenton Area
Take Route 31 towards Flemington. When Route 31 joins with Route 202 North, continue North on 202. Exit onto 287 North and proceed to the NJ 124 East exit (exit 35 - Madison). Once on 124 East, follow directions above (see "From I-80/I-287").

By Train:

NJ Transit train service to Madison leaves passengers a short walk from the theater. NJ Transit's Mid-Town Direct service on the Morris-Essex line leaves from NY Penn station. The ride is about 40 minutes long. When you get off the train in Madison, cross under the tracks. Turn right and walk in the same direction the train was traveling until you reach Green Village Road. Turn left onto Green Village Road (at the Sunoco station). Walk up the hill about 300 yards.Playwrights Theater is on the right hand side. You'll see the sign at the entrance. The walk takes about 6 minutes.
